Music has always been a part of Karuna Shinsho's life since her father, a classical singer and radio DJ, took her to concerts as a child in Hawaii. She fell in love with jazz after seeing the late Nancy Wilson sing in Tokyo. Karuna also became obsessed with bossa nova after hearing the songs of João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim. After a successful career as an award-winning journalist and during a challenging period, singing became a great source of comfort for Karuna. At that time, she also met her mentor Nanny Assis, who upon seeing her passion for music, agreed to produce her first album of uniquely arranged bossa nova classics and jazz standards in three different languages (English, Portuguese, and Japanese). The album title "To Love Again" reflects the human need, not just for romantic love, but also for self-love and compassion for others. She founded “Stay Active, Happy Her, Happy Us” to inspire female university students to be active in sport and physical activity. Her vision is to positively change existing gender norms and bring communities together to raise awareness on conflict management and gender-based violence. Jane is the first person in Vietnam to teach sports from a non-physical education perspective, including courses in sports management and tourism. She organized the 2017 International Conference on Sport Management, the first ever held in Vietnam, bringing together more than 200 professors from 28 countries.
